The small renovation / Keep the cabinets

Fit comes first.
Finish comes next.

Can I replace cabinet hardware without drilling new holes?

Yes, if the replacement matches the existing hole pattern and works with the cabinet’s thickness, surface and opening movement. For a two-hole pull, match the distance between the screw-hole centers, then check the rest of the fit. I would begin with the hardware already there, measure every distinct group, and try one correctly specified sample before ordering the kitchen’s full quantity.

Before you shop

Name the problem the new handle must solve.

“The kitchen needs updating” is a broad brief for a small object. Is the present hardware uncomfortable, loose, visually busy, or simply carrying residue? Those problems call for different responses. A more expensive pull will not repair a damaged mounting hole or a drawer that sticks.

  1. Inspect what you own. Follow the maker’s care instructions for the existing finish. Do not assume a metal polish is suitable for a plated or coated surface. If the finish is unknown, identify it before experimenting.
  2. Check function. If a handle is loose, investigate the fitting and fastener before replacing it. Stop if the thread spins, the hole is damaged or the fitting will not seat. A cabinet repair may be the useful first expense.
  3. Edit the view for free. Clear a section of counter and look again. If the handles now seem proportionate and comfortable, keep them. The counter-space reset can help separate a hardware problem from a crowded room.
  4. Keep the originals. Label removed hardware and screws by location. In a rental, check permission and restoration requirements before changing fittings.

01 / The measurement that decides compatibility

Same holes.
Different silhouettes.

The two imaginary pulls below have the same mounting centers. Their bodies extend different distances beyond those centers. Overall length tells you about appearance and clearance; center spacing tells you where the screws go.

Make a fit record before a mood board.

Emtek’s measuring guidance defines center-to-center as the distance between the mounting-hole centers and advises matching that dimension when replacing hardware. Measure the actual cabinet, not the visible end-to-end length of the old handle. Use a ruler you can read precisely; do not round a measurement to the nearest familiar size.

If you can safely remove one handle, support it while undoing its screws and inspect what it concealed. Record the hole spacing, the old base outline and any discoloration or impression. A smaller new base may leave a visible ring even when the screw centers match. Repeat the check across doors and drawers instead of assuming the whole room uses one spacing.

Your four-line fit record

Hole pattern
One hole or two? Exact center spacing, units and number of pieces in each group.
Front + fastener
Thickness through which the screw passes, including any drawer-box layer; required screw type and length from the new hardware’s instructions.
Footprint + reach
Base coverage, overall length, projection and room for your fingers behind the handle.
Movement
Check the fully opening door or drawer against neighboring handles, walls and appliance fronts.

Top Knobs’ FAQ explains that its supplied screws accommodate different cabinet thicknesses and directs customers to request other lengths when needed. That is a reminder to verify the actual fitting. Included screws are not a promise that every existing drawer construction will work.

02 / Decide what kind of change is possible

The hole pattern sets the brief.

One existing knob holeTry another compatible single-hole fitting and inspect its base coverage.A conventional two-hole pull would usually require another hole.
Matching centers, visible old footprintCompare a wider base or a maker-approved compatible backplate.A backplate changes the look and adds fitting requirements; it does not repair damage.
Unclear spacing or worn mounting holesHave the cabinet or hardware supplier assess the existing front before ordering.A repair or custom solution may cost more than the decorative part.
A panel-ready applianceFollow the appliance and panel manufacturer’s handle requirements.A decorative cabinet pull is not automatically suitable for the appliance.

Try one sample where the kitchen is hardest to use.

Choose the drawer used most often or the door nearest a return wall. With the right screws and the manufacturer’s instructions, check whether the sample sits flat without forcing either screw into alignment. Open and close the front normally. Try the grip with the people who use that cabinet, then check adjacent fronts together.

A slim bar can look elegant but leave too little finger room for a particular user. A deeper handle can be easier to grasp yet collide with a neighboring front. A paper outline helps judge overall length; it cannot confirm grip, surface feel or fastener fit. Do not enlarge holes to make an almost-fitting sample work if the goal is to preserve the cabinets.

My design suggestion: make the handles a quiet underline.

On a kitchen with expressive stone or strong wood grain, try a restrained handle profile repeated across one complete cabinet run. Let its finish echo one existing detail, such as a pendant interior, without requiring every metal in the room to match. A quieter line may give the material around it more presence.

Mixed existing hole sizes do not require random styling. Look for a family that offers the required sizes with a similar profile. If no family covers every group, keep the serviceable originals while you investigate. Replacing only scattered handles can make an otherwise calm room feel unresolved.

Brass-colored / plated steel

IKEA BAGGANÄS

The brass-color 5⅝-inch handle, article 003.384.07, lists 5¹⁄₁₆-inch hole spacing, 1¼-inch depth and suitability for ½- to ¾-inch-thick doors. The material is brass-plated steel with clear lacquer, not solid brass. The listed price was $10 per two-pack; local stock was not confirmed.

Useful to investigate when that exact hole pattern and construction fit. Do not select it from the overall-length headline alone.

Solid metal / selectable finish

Rejuvenation Massey

The listing offers selectable center spacings including 3, 4 and 6 inches. Its 4-inch option lists a 4⅝-inch overall width and 1-inch projection. Materials are listed as solid brass or bronze, depending on selection; finish-specific care varies.

Useful to investigate for a compatible inch-based hole pattern and a broader finish choice. Select the size and finish before treating the displayed options as an orderable configuration.

A worked order / Hypothetical seven-pull refresh

Count pieces.
Then count packs.

Suppose seven fronts pass all the fit checks for the specific BAGGANÄS option above. Buying seven “items” without reading the pack quantity would order twice as many handles as needed.

Buy one two-pack for the sample check. If it passes and you proceed with all seven handles, three more two-packs complete the order. Four packs supply eight handles, leaving one spare. At the checked price, the hardware subtotal is $40, excluding tax, shipping and any additional fittings.

If the sample fails, stop at the sample rather than ordering the rest. The example assumes matching fronts and a successful physical check; it does not establish fit for your kitchen.

When this small refresh is not enough

If doors sag, fronts are damaged, the mounting area is weak or a user cannot comfortably operate the cabinet, resolve that problem first. This article is a selection method for sound existing cabinetry, not an installation manual, a repair specification or an individualized accessibility assessment.
