Measure what the rug must support
Round to the nearest six inches. Measure the furniture grouping, not each individual piece.
The finishing rules
Three details make a rug feel intentional.
- 01
Center it on the furniture. In a living room, the seating group matters more than the room walls.
- 02
Protect the floor border. Leave at least 6 inches around the rug, with 8 to 24 inches preferred in most rooms.
- 03
Use the right pad. Choose a pad about 1 inch smaller on every side for grip and cleaner edges.
