Before you shop
Measure the furniture relationship, not only the room.
An undersized rug can make every sofa and chair look disconnected. An oversized rug can remove the visual breathing room that gives the flooring and architecture definition.
Begin with the room length and width. Then measure the furniture grouping the rug must support. The placement rule changes by room, so use the relevant formula below.

Living room placement
Let the seating group set the scale.

Front-legs placement
Place the front legs of the sofa and every main chair on the rug. Extend the rug at least 6 inches beyond both ends of the sofa when possible.

All-legs placement
Place the complete seating group on the rug, leaving a visible rug border around the furniture. This creates a generous room-within-a-room effect.

Map it before ordering
Use painter's tape to outline the rug. Walk around the room, open nearby doors, and confirm that side tables and chair legs meet the rug intentionally.
Check the outline from the doorway, not only from the sofa.

Add chair clearance to the table.
Measure the tabletop at its largest size, including extension leaves. Add 48 to 60 inches to both the table length and width. That creates 24 to 30 inches of rug beyond every edge.

Bedroom starting points
Frame the bed and create a soft landing.
Turn the long rug dimension in the same direction as the bed. Begin near the nightstands or beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, then extend beyond the sides and foot.
