Build a room around what you read
Mix books you use with a few objects that matter to you. Leave some shelf space free so the collection can grow. Before designing built-ins, measure the largest books and decide which everyday items belong behind closed doors.
Separate tone from texture
Olive and walnut can sit close in depth, so vary the surfaces: matte walls, visible wood grain, and a supple or woven upholstery. Bring samples together rather than choosing each finish in isolation. Keep a lighter rug or chair to relieve the darker perimeter.
Give reading its own light
Place focused light where a book is held, then check it from the adjacent seats. A shaded lamp can help the reading area feel distinct from the conversation area. Confirm cord routes before moving furniture into its final position.
