The design notes

What makes this room work.

01

Give the color a continuous surface

Use teal on a defined wall or shelving surround to make the reading area feel intentional. Compare samples with book spines and nearby wood. Leave the ceiling or another large surface lighter if that suits the room.

02

Treat the chaise as a large piece

A chaise occupies more depth than a chair. Mark the full footprint and test getting into it, reaching a table, and passing it. A chair and movable ottoman may offer more flexibility in a tight room.

03

Choose one useful pool of light

Position the reading light for the person in the seat and check reflections on framed art or glass doors. Keep controls reachable. Add general light for cleaning and finding books rather than relying on a single decorative glow.

Make it yours

Borrow the idea.

Use a teal backdrop and warm chair in an existing living room. You can create the same color relationship without built-in shelves or a chaise.

Before you bring it home

  • Tape the full seat and footrest footprint.
  • Check reading light from the actual seated position.
  • Keep shelf access comfortable and unobstructed.
