Salt & Poppy: A Map Room

Salt limewash, poppy lacquer, slate-blue storage and travertine create a practical room for map reading, drawing and slow planning.

Salt-white map room with a pale travertine worktable, natural-bouclé chairs, poppy-red flat drawers, slate-blue cabinetry and a reeded-glass chandelier.

This daylit map room supports reading, sketching and planning without making a therapeutic claim. A pale travertine table gives large sheets a stable center, curved natural-bouclé chairs soften long sessions, and poppy-red flat drawers keep rolled and folded materials close without taking over the worktop. Slate-blue glazed storage, woven shades and a reeded-glass chandelier balance display, glare control and general light while a cork board keeps temporary reference material visible.

The design notes

What makes this room work.

01

Choose the table from sheet size and reach

Mock up the largest map, sketch pad or project sheet you expect to use, then add chair pull-back and a route around every occupied seat. A deep table is useful only if the center remains reachable without leaning on stone or dragging paper. Keep one clear end for rolling, trimming or photographing work.

02

Give active material shallow storage

Use flat drawers for current maps and paper, deeper closed cabinets for tools, and a cork panel for temporary references. Check drawer depth against the largest sheet and keep often-used supplies between knee and shoulder height. Reserve glazed shelves for books and finished objects so the work zone does not become visual storage.

03

Control daylight separately from task light

Observe the room at its brightest hour and use woven shades to soften direct sun and surface glare without assuming blackout. Treat the chandelier as ambient light, then add adjustable high-color-rendering task lamps where fine distinctions matter. Test shadows from each chair before fixing outlets and fixture positions.

Make it yours

Borrow the idea.

Use an existing dining table with a large cutting mat or protected board, add a shallow drawer unit painted poppy red and turn one bookcase slate blue. A pinboard and woven shade can improve reference display and glare control without custom cabinetry or a new ceiling fixture.

Before you bring it home

  • Mock up the table, occupied chairs, open drawers, cabinet doors, sheet-handling zone and every walking route.
  • Observe direct sun, glare and shadows across the work surface before selecting shades and task-light positions.
  • Confirm stone care and weight, chair clearance, drawer dimensions, cabinet anchoring, chandelier support, dimming and cord routes.
