Rhythm Blue & Cedar: A Herbarium Studio

Rhythm-blue plaster, dark cedar, parchment and polished nickel form a focused herbarium studio for pressing, mounting and cataloging botanical specimens.

Indigo-blue plaster creates a deep backdrop for a substantial cedar worktable, flat archival drawers and warm concealed shelf light. Parchment specimen sheets keep the center visually light, while a molded-walnut lounge chair and polished-nickel task lamp establish a separate place to review reference books. The room is designed as a practical craft studio: active pressing and mounting stay on the large table, finished sheets move to flat storage, and the main route remains clear.

The design notes

What makes this room work.

01

Divide active work from flat storage

Keep the pressing, mounting and drying zone on the open table, then reserve shallow labeled drawers for finished sheets and paper. Measure the largest press and sheet before choosing drawer depth. Leave enough tabletop clear for one complete project rather than allowing the storage system to consume the work surface.

02

Light the paper without glazing it with glare

Place the adjustable task light to the opposite side of the working hand and test it on pale paper before committing to the desk position. Use concealed shelf light for orientation and display only. Polished nickel should sit outside direct sight lines so its reflections do not obscure fine botanical details.

03

Plan the lounge corner as a separate review zone

Include the full chair and ottoman footprint, side-table reach and lamp base in the floor plan. Keep books and finished reference pieces near the chair while tools remain at the desk. The separation supports a cleaner workflow without implying any medical or therapeutic result.

Make it yours

Borrow the idea.

Use a sturdy existing dining table for pressing and mounting, add flat archival boxes to a low cabinet and paint one pinboard rhythm blue instead of the whole room. A walnut lounge chair or comfortable reading chair and an adjustable nickel task lamp can create the review corner without custom millwork.

Before you bring it home

  • Mock up the worktable, largest press, open flat drawers, lounge chair, ottoman and all walking routes.
  • Test blue paint, cedar, parchment and metal samples under window light, shelf light and the chosen task lamp.
  • Confirm desk weight and access, paper-safe storage, lamp reach and cord routing, chair dimensions, ventilation and tool-maker instructions.
