Choose the seat for its user
Try the chair where possible and compare seat height, depth and support. An ottoman should be positioned for the person using it, not simply aligned for a photograph. If a swivel chair is preferable, leave room for the whole rotation. A visually beautiful chair is not useful if it is difficult to get out of.
Put light where the page is
Arrange the task light around your normal reading position and check whether your body casts a shadow. Keep controls reachable and route the cord away from the walking path. Use window coverings to adjust glare. The lamp is a practical tool first; its brass finish is a secondary link to the room’s palette.
Keep the essentials close
Provide a surface for a drink and a place for the book that is currently in use. A small amount of closed storage can prevent the corner from becoming a pile of magazines. Keep the route into and out of the seat obvious. Add a blanket only if its texture feels pleasant to the person using the space.
